Tenacity application rate: acre rate vs per-gallon rate

Syngenta's current materials describe Tenacity use rates in fluid ounces per acre. The company's 2026 guidance commonly gives a 5–8 fl oz/A range for many uses, while specific bentgrass-control programs use 4–5 fl oz/A.

Converting 5–8 fl oz/A to 1,000 sq ft gives approximately 0.115–0.184 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft, or about 0.69–1.10 teaspoons per 1,000 sq ft. Water volume is separate: calibrate the sprayer, then divide the area dose across the gallons your equipment actually applies.

Tenacity and overseeding / new grass

Syngenta specifically markets Tenacity for use around seeding of labeled turfgrass species. Current 2026 guidance says it may be applied around seeding and uses 5–8 fl oz/A, with the 5 fl oz/A low rate for existing stands containing more than 50% ryegrass or fine fescue. The same guidance says not to use it on seed mixtures containing more than 20% fine fescue by weight.

Does Tenacity need a surfactant?

Syngenta's current FAQ says a good-quality non-ionic surfactant (NIS) is used for the hand-held/backpack post-emergence example, and current seeding guidance recommends NIS when weeds are present. Surfactant need and rate are application-specific, so the area calculator only calculates NIS when you explicitly enter the percentage from the applicable instructions.

Syngenta's current Tenacity FAQ gives a hand-held or backpack reference of 1 teaspoon of Tenacity in 2 gallons of water, which is 0.5 teaspoon per gallon, together with 3 teaspoons of a good-quality non-ionic surfactant per 2 gallons for that post-emergence mixing example. Use the per-gallon tab only when that manufacturer guidance fits your application.

What is the Tenacity rate per 1,000 sq ft?

Tenacity is fundamentally an area-rate product. Syngenta's current materials commonly show 5–8 fl oz per acre for many uses. That converts to about 0.115–0.184 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft, or about 0.69–1.10 teaspoons per 1,000 sq ft. The exact label rate depends on turf, weed and timing.

Does Tenacity need a surfactant?

For post-emergence weed control, Syngenta says a good-quality non-ionic surfactant is needed or recommended for weed coverage in the situations described in its current guidance. At seeding, a non-ionic surfactant is recommended when weeds are present. Follow the current label and application-specific directions rather than assuming one surfactant rate for every use.

What is the active ingredient in Tenacity?

Tenacity's active ingredient is mesotrione. Syngenta identifies Tenacity as a Group 27 herbicide with EPA registration number 100-1267.

Why is Tenacity amount based on area instead of gallons of water?

The herbicide dose is set by treated area and label rate, while water is the carrier used to distribute that dose. Two calibrated sprayers can use different gallons of water over the same 1,000 sq ft and still apply the same Tenacity amount. Use the area tab when you know your lawn size and calibration.
