Grass seed rates per 1,000 sq ft

Seed rates vary by species, cultivar, seed coating, germination percentage, climate and establishment method. The calculator uses the following reference presets for new lawns, while keeping the rate field editable.

Coated seed and Pure Live Seed (PLS) can change the number of pounds of bagged product required. Always check the seed label rather than assuming all bags contain the same amount of viable seed.

Overseeding calculator: use the rate for the job

Overseeding is not simply “new-lawn rate divided by two” for every species. The preset list only auto-fills overseeding rates where the references used here provide a reasonably direct lawn-renovation value: 3.5–4.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for tall fescue and 4–6 lb per 1,000 sq ft for perennial ryegrass renovation.

For winter overseeding of dormant bermudagrass with perennial ryegrass, UGA Extension gives 8–10 lb per 1,000 sq ft. For Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, bermudagrass renovation, zoysiagrass and proprietary seed mixtures, enter the rate from the bag or your local Extension recommendation.

After you know the seed amount: set and calibrate the spreader

A seed quantity calculator tells you how many pounds belong on the lawn. It does not determine a universal dial number. Scotts, Lesco, EarthWay and other spreaders use different scales, and seed size changes flow through the gate.

How much grass seed do I need?

Multiply lawn area in thousands of square feet by the seeding rate in pounds per 1,000 sq ft. A 5,000 sq ft lawn at 7 lb per 1,000 sq ft needs 35 lb of seed before any optional purchase buffer. The calculator does this automatically and can round up to whole bags.

How much grass seed do I need per 1,000 square feet?

It depends on the turf species and whether you are establishing a new lawn or overseeding. Penn State lists about 6–8 lb per 1,000 sq ft for turf-type tall fescue, 2–3 lb for Kentucky bluegrass, 4–5 lb for perennial ryegrass, and 4–5 lb for fine fescues when establishing turf. Use your seed-bag rate or local Extension recommendation when it differs.

What rate should I use for overseeding?

Overseeding rates are not universal. Missouri Extension gives about 3.5–4.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for overseeding tall fescue, while Penn State lists 4–6 lb per 1,000 sq ft for perennial ryegrass renovation. For other species and mixtures, enter the rate printed on your bag or recommended locally.

How many bags of grass seed should I buy?

Enter the seed-bag weight in the calculator. It divides the required seed by bag weight and rounds up to the next whole bag. If you choose an optional buffer, the bag calculation includes that extra seed.

What is the seeding rate for bermudagrass?

For seeded bermudagrass lawns, University of Florida and Oklahoma State references give about 1–2 lb of seed per 1,000 sq ft, with seed quality, coating and pure-live-seed percentage affecting the actual product weight needed. Check the seed label before buying.

What Scotts spreader setting should I use for grass seed?

Spreader settings depend on the exact Scotts model, seed product and target pounds per 1,000 sq ft. First calculate how many pounds of seed you need here, then use the site's Scotts Spreader Settings page and calibrate the spreader against the bag rate.
