Spray Mix Calculators Spray Coverage Calculator

Spray Coverage Calculator

Estimate coverage per tank, tanks needed, and total spray volume from an application rate like gal/acre, gal/1000 sq ft, L/ha, or L/100 m².

How to calculate sprayer coverage

  1. Enter tank volume: Add your sprayer tank size in gallons or liters.
  2. Enter application rate: Add the rate in gal/acre, gal/1,000 sq ft, L/ha, or L/100 m².
  3. Optional: enter total area: Add area to estimate total spray volume and tanks needed.
  4. Use results: Plan refills and total mix. Calibrate your sprayer if results don’t match real-world output.

Tank Coverage & Tanks Needed

Enter your tank size and application rate to estimate coverage per tank. Optionally enter a target area to estimate total spray volume and tanks needed.

If you need a rate first, start with Sprayer Calibration. Then mix concentrate with Spray Mix Calculator.

Quick reference examples

These are simple examples to sanity-check your inputs. Your real results depend on label rate and sprayer calibration.

Tank Rate Coverage (approx.)
4 gal 20 gal/acre 0.20 acre (≈ 8,712 sq ft)
25 gal 1 gal/1000 sq ft 25,000 sq ft (≈ 0.57 acre)
15 L 200 L/ha 0.075 ha (≈ 750 m²)

Coverage per tank is basically: area = tank volume ÷ (volume per area). Tanks needed is: tanks = (rate × total area) ÷ tank volume.

How much area does a backpack sprayer cover?

The answer depends entirely on your application rate (how much spray you apply per area). Here are common scenarios for a 4-gallon backpack sprayer:

Don't know your rate? Calibrate your sprayer first, then come back to estimate coverage. For mixing the right concentrate amount, use the Backpack Sprayer Calculator.

Coverage by sprayer size (at common rates)

Quick reference for how much area different sprayer tank sizes will cover at typical application rates:

Tank Size At 1 gal/1,000 sqft At 20 gal/acre At 40 gal/acre
1 gal 1,000 sq ft 0.05 acre 0.025 acre
2 gal 2,000 sq ft 0.10 acre 0.05 acre
4 gal 4,000 sq ft 0.20 acre 0.10 acre
15 gal 15,000 sq ft 0.75 acre 0.375 acre
25 gal 25,000 sq ft 1.25 acre 0.625 acre

For exact coverage at your specific rate, use the calculator above. These values assume the full tank is used at a consistent rate.

Important notes

Always follow the product label for approved uses, PPE, and mixing/application instructions. This tool provides coverage math only. If your results don't match real-world performance, calibrate your sprayer (nozzle output, walking/driving speed, pressure, and swath width all matter). Need help interpreting your label's rate? See the label dilution guide.

FAQ

How do I calculate how many acres a tank will cover?

If your rate is in gal/acre, divide your tank gallons by the gal/acre rate. Example: a 4 gal tank at 20 gal/acre covers 0.20 acre.

What does gal/1000 sq ft mean?

It’s the amount of total spray mix applied to 1,000 sq ft. For example, 1 gal/1000 sq ft means each gallon covers about 1,000 sq ft. This calculator converts it into coverage per tank and tanks needed.

How do I calculate tanks needed for a total area?

Compute total spray volume needed (rate × area), then divide by tank size. The calculator does both steps and shows the result as a rounded-up “tanks needed” number for planning.

Does this replace sprayer calibration?

No. This is coverage math only. Real output varies with nozzle type, pressure, speed, and swath width. Calibrate your sprayer and follow the label for safe and legal use.

How the math works

Application rates are written as volume per area (like gal/acre or L/ha). To get coverage per tank, convert everything into consistent units and divide: coverage = tank volume ÷ rate.

To estimate tanks needed, compute total spray volume: total volume = rate × total area, then tanks = total volume ÷ tank volume.
