Note: labels typically mean oz of concentrate per final gallon of spray mix. If your label says "per gallon of water," follow that wording instead.
Worked examples: how many oz per gallon calculator
These step-by-step examples show how to use the formula and verify what the calculator gives you — useful if you want to understand the math, not just the answer.
Example 1 — Label says "2 oz per gallon": how many oz for a 4-gallon backpack?
Multiply the rate by your tank size: 2 oz/gal × 4 gal = 8 fl oz of concentrate. Fill the remaining volume with water to reach 4 gallons total. In kitchen measures, 8 fl oz = 1 cup. The equivalent dilution ratio is approximately 1:63 (128 ÷ 2 − 1 = 63).
Example 2 — Label says "4 oz per gallon": 1-gallon and 4-gallon tanks
For a 1-gallon pump sprayer: add 4 fl oz (½ cup) of concentrate and fill to 1 gallon with water. For a 4-gallon backpack: 4 oz/gal × 4 = 16 fl oz (1 pint, 2 cups) of concentrate. The equivalent ratio is approximately 1:31 (128 ÷ 4 − 1 = 31), which is commonly called 1:32.
Example 3 — Label says "1:32 ratio": what is that in oz per gallon?
Use the formula: 128 ÷ (1 + 32) = 128 ÷ 33 = 3.88 fl oz per gallon. For a 25-gallon ATV sprayer: 3.88 × 25 = 97 fl oz (about 3 quarts) of concentrate total.
Example 4 — Label says "32 oz per acre" and you spray at 20 GPA
First convert to oz/gal: 32 oz/acre ÷ 20 GPA = 1.6 oz/gal. For a 4-gallon backpack at 20 GPA: 1.6 × 4 = 6.4 fl oz of concentrate per tank, which will cover 4 gal ÷ 20 GPA = 0.2 acres per fill. A 10-acre field would need 50 fills, or you could scale up to a larger tank.
Use the calculator above for any rate and tank size. For oz/acre jobs, confirm your GPA first with the Gallons Per Acre Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How many ounces per gallon is 1:16?
A 1:16 ratio equals 7.53 oz per gallon (formula: 128 ÷ (1 + 16) = 128 ÷ 17 = 7.53). For a 4-gallon backpack sprayer, that is about 30 fl oz of concentrate.
How many ounces per gallon is 1:32?
A 1:32 ratio equals 3.88 oz per gallon (128 ÷ 33 = 3.88), commonly rounded to 4 oz/gal. For a 4-gallon backpack sprayer, use about 15.5 fl oz of concentrate. This is one of the most common pesticide and herbicide label rates.
How many ounces per gallon is 1:64?
A 1:64 ratio equals 1.97 oz per gallon (128 ÷ 65 = 1.97), commonly rounded to 2 oz/gal. For a 4-gallon backpack sprayer, use 8 fl oz (1 cup) of concentrate.
How many ounces per gallon is 1:128?
A 1:128 ratio equals 1 oz per gallon (128 ÷ 129 ≈ 0.99, rounded to 1). For a 4-gallon backpack sprayer, use 4 fl oz (¼ cup) of concentrate.
What is 2 oz per gallon as a ratio?
2 oz per gallon equals a ratio of approximately 1:63 (X = 128 ÷ 2 − 1 = 63). It is commonly listed as 1:64 in standard mixing tables. For a 4-gallon sprayer at this rate, use 8 fl oz total.
What is 4 oz per gallon as a ratio?
4 oz per gallon equals a ratio of 1:31 (X = 128 ÷ 4 − 1 = 31), commonly approximated as 1:32. For a 4-gallon backpack sprayer, use 16 fl oz (1 pint) of concentrate total.
What is 8 oz per gallon as a ratio?
8 oz per gallon equals a ratio of 1:15 (128 ÷ 8 − 1 = 15), commonly approximated as 1:16. For a 4-gallon sprayer, use 32 fl oz (1 quart) of concentrate total.
How do I convert oz per acre to oz per gallon?
Divide your label rate by your gallons per acre (GPA): oz/gal = oz/acre ÷ GPA. For example, 32 oz/acre at 20 GPA = 1.6 oz per gallon. See the oz per acre to oz per gallon section above for a full table of worked examples. Use the Gallons Per Acre Calculator if you need to determine your GPA first.
Does oz/gal mean per gallon of water or per final gallon?
Usually it means ounces of concentrate per gallon of final spray mix (not per gallon of water). The difference is small at low rates but meaningful at high rates — always follow the specific wording on the product label.
How do I calculate total concentrate for a full tank?
Multiply your label rate by your tank size in gallons: total oz = oz/gal × tank gallons. Example: 2 oz/gal × 15-gallon ATV sprayer = 30 fl oz total. Use Tank Total mode in the calculator above for any size.
