Why drop spreader settings run higher than broadcast

A broadcast spreader — EdgeGuard, Elite, Wizz — flings product outward off a spinning disc, covering a fan several feet wide with every pass. A drop spreader has no disc at all: the gate opens directly above the ground and releases product in a band exactly as wide as the hopper. That band is much narrower than a broadcast fan, so to deliver the same lbs-per-1,000-sq-ft rate over less ground per pass, the gate has to open wider. That's the entire reason the same product's Drop setting sits noticeably higher than its EdgeGuard or Elite setting on the chart below — it isn't a different rate, it's a different amount of ground covered per foot walked.

The upside of the narrow band is precision: there's no thrown fan to drift onto a driveway, into a pond, or across a property line. That's exactly why drop spreaders remain the standard choice for anything adjacent to water, hardscape, or a neighbor's garden bed, even though they're slower than a broadcast model over open lawn.

The double-strip mistake

Because there's no throw to blend one pass into the next, drop-spreader coverage lives or dies on how precisely you overlap wheel tracks. Overlap the hopper edges instead of the wheel tracks and you double-feed a narrow strip — it shows up as a darker green line within a week or two of a fertilizer application. Leave a gap instead and you get the opposite: a lighter, thinner strip that shows up as an uneven, patchy mow line. The fix is the same either way — line up each pass so the wheels retrace the previous pass's wheel tracks, which naturally overlaps the hopper by about an inch on each side without double-feeding it.
